What I’m Doing to Prep for Hurricane Milton

readysetdecluttero

Ya'll, hurricane Milton is happening and it's expected to roll in by Wednesday, so I'm getting things ready because I am a little nervous. I’m in Orlando so I’m not too worried about a direct hit or anything, but after seeing the heartbreaking devastation caused by Helene, I'm more cautious.

Today’s all about picking up around the house. I’m picking stuff up off the floors, especially in the main areas like the kitchen and living room. I'm cleaning, doing laundry, and getting the house in tip top shape because my brain needs order right now. I know it might be the least of people's worry to organize and tidy before a storm, but for me less clutter means less stress and I need all the stress relief I can get.

The plan is to also set up essentials in one spot and making sure we have everything we might need. I'm going to put everything by the front door, like flashlights, batteries, chargers, the whole deal so hubby and I know exactly where everything is. If the lights go out, boom, we both know exactly where to find what we need without digging around to find things. As far as water, we were able to get a case of over the weekend, but I'm going to focus on making sure we have enough for a few days and get food (bread and pb and j) for a few days. First aid kit is stocked, medication is refilled, and I even got little portable fans over the weekend to keep us cool.

Tomorrow I'm planning on moving anything really important up higher just in case there’s any flooding. I’m not too worried about that, but better safe than sorry because 2 years ago during Ian I believe, some of the units in our complex did get some water. By Wednesday, we should be all set. I will probably just make sure all our devices are charged, do some last minute laundry and fill up the bathtub with water in case the power goes and we need extra for flushing or washing up. Another thing we've done in the past is freeze water bottles in case we do lose power, it'll help keep our fridge/freezer cooler longer and give us access to cooler drinking water too.

Even though we’re inland, the wind can still get crazy so my husband is going to bring in any items that can blow away. Once that’s done, it’s just waiting it out and trying to stay comfortable and safe. For me, staying somewhat organized helps keep the anxiety in check, especially with ADHD because my brain tends to jump around in a million directions and I stress out. Even writing this out here is helping me put all the thoughts somewhere. Organizing my stuff in one spot, and breaking things down over the next day or two days will hopefully help me feel like I’ve got a handle on it.

So that’s my plan, folks! If you're prepping too, I hope this helps. How do you usually prep for bad weather/hurricanes? Did I miss anything?

Stay safe, everyone and listen to evacuation orders if you're in areas that will experience direct impact.
